Historic Downtown Durango is the heart of our mountain town, a hub for activity and excitement. Visitors will find that there is a wide range of things to do in Downtown Durango, as well as a host of shops and events to discover.
While by no means a comprehensive list, the places and ideas listed below serve as an example of what’s available.
Downtown Durango is nestled next to the Animas River, consisting of many businesses and restaurants. Widthwise, it stretches from E 3rd Ave all the way to the river. Length wise, the downtown area spans E 15th St to just past E 5th St.
Durango was founded in 1880 by the Denver & Rio Grande Railroad. As such, our town has a very storied history as it developed over the years. Horsefly History Tours is dedicated to helping keep that history alive.
This women-owned tour company works with a number of historical experts in order to give visitors the most accurate information about Durango. From rough and tumble stories about the Wild West, to mesmerizing tales of the ghosts that haunt the town, Horsefly History Tours seeks to make history come alive for their guests as they walk the streets of Durango.
You can find out more information about their tours on their website.
Visiting the Durango Farmers Market is a fantastic way to see what our town has to offer. The market is a long standing tradition where local farmers, artisans, musicians, and more come together to share their goods and crafts. All food items at this open air market are fresh and grown by the locals themselves. You’ll find that each vendor brings a sincere passion for what they do and are always open to questions.
While many vendors can take cards and cash, not all do. Fortunately, the managers of the Market have created an ingenious system called “Market Bucks”. Visitors who don’t have cash can purchase the Market Bucks with no additional charges to be able to use at any vendor in the market. The Market also offers a similar system with SNAP coupons and DUFB vouchers.
Downtown Durango has quite a few art galleries, especially between E 11th st and W College Dr. Each gallery showcases some of the best local art that our town has to offer. While there are too many to showcase in this article, here are just a few examples:
To have a true glimpse at Durango’s galleries, you can download an art walk map from Durango.com, which has a bit more information about some of the more popular stops.
Visitors who are passionate about tabletop gaming, collectibles, miniature gaming, and/or puzzles should make time to visit this shop in Main Mall. Guild House Games boasts a wide selection of puzzles and board games as well as products from popular gaming franchises, such as:
In addition, Guild House Games also holds regular events, such as Friday Night Magic, as well as competitive tournaments.
